| Alden Whitmanb: New Albany, Nova Scotia, Canada, Oct 27, 1913 d: Monte Carlo, Monaco, Sep 4, 1990 Alden Whitman was an American journalist. He worked at The New York Times where he pioneered writing personalized obituaries. He is also known for his testimony before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee. Death, the cliche assures us, is the great leveler; but it obviously levels some a great deal more than others. That's what an obit is supposed to be-a picture, a snapshot. It's not a full-length biography, it's not a portrait. It's a quick picture. |
