| Alex Loweb: Frederick, Maryland, USA, Dec 24, 1958 d: Shisnapangma, Tibet, Oct 5, 1999 Stuart Alexander "Alex" Lowe, was widely considered one of his generation's finest all-around mountaineers prior to his October 5, 1999 death in a massive slab avalanche on Shishapangma (Xixabangma) in Tibet. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all. Climbing, when I first started 20, 25 years ago, was a much smaller community. And I think climbers were seen to be sort of iconoclastics of the social misfits, so we all tended to coalesce a little more, maybe, than climbers do today. I often start into these trips knowing that there's an underlying purpose that transcends merely climbing a peak. I think climbing is less a sport and more a hobby, and as such, I think everybody's a beginning climber. Rather than being a risk-taker as such, I consider myself and my climbing peers to be risk-controllers, and we just enjoy being in this situation and keeping risk at a reasonable level. |
