| Allen Boyd As a fiscal conservative, I believe one of the most important roles the federal government can play in assuring that our economy remains strong is to keep our fiscal house in order. As an active member of the Air Force, Army and Mine Warfare Caucuses, I meet with enlisted personnel and officers on a regular basis to learn more about their needs, both on the job and with their families. As someone who has seen war first hand, and as a father of three young adults, it was my hope that we could have resolved this conflict and disarmed Saddam Hussein without war. However, this was not the case. I strongly believe that American farmers and businesses can compete with anyone in the world if they are given a level playing field. It is time for Congress to provide relief for tobacco farmers. Since the 1930's tobacco production has been regulated by a quota system, which required farmers to purchase quota in order to grow tobacco. It's a state in the South where you know darn well President Bush is going to be spending a lot of time and a lot of effort there. Our government has made a number of promises to the men and women who served in our nation's armed forces. Sadly, these promises of health care, education and other benefits have existed more in rhetoric than in reality. The northern part of the state is very much like a Deep South state. Obviously, the Miami area is an international area. There's a lot of bitterness, there's a lot of anger out there. We all have to work hard to heal those wounds. Though no one wants war, Congress needed to give the President the authority he needs to protect America while encouraging the use of diplomacy and negotiations to try and arrive at a peaceful solution to this problem. |
