| Eric Brown 'Made it as a writer'? I'm still wondering if I've made it as a writer. I've made it as a published writer of the type of SF that I want to write and read, but I'm still waiting for that big breakthrough. I think it's a short story writer's duty, as well as writing well about emotions and characters, to write story. I write about five thousand words a day, when working on a book, about three thousand a day if I'm writing a short story. I take long periods off between projects, when I read a lot, garden, and think about the next book or stories. In '82 I'd sold a short SF play for children to Holt, Rheinhart and Winston, but I didn't consider this as a 'start' or a breakthrough in any way. It does appear that I've been doing nothing but scribbling, but some of the books were written a while back, and have only just gone into print. The inspiration to write? Perhaps it's not so much inspiration, as a NEED to write. I get itchy and guilty and dissatisfied when I haven't written for a while. Ideas come to me and need to be written down. |
