A commodity appears at first sight an extremely obvious, trivial thing. But its analysis brings out that it is a very strange thing, abounding in metaphysical subtleties and theological niceties. The philosophers have only interpreted the world in different ways; the point is to change it. The policy of Russia is changeless. Its methods, its tactics, its maneuvers may change, but the polar star of its policy, world domination, is a fixed star. The theory of the Communists may be summed up in the single sentence: abolition of private property. The writer may very well serve a movement of history as its mouthpiece, but he cannot of course create it. The writer must earn money in order to be able to live and to write, but he must by no means live and write for the purpose of making money. While the miser is merely a capitalist gone mad, the capitalist is a rational miser. Workers of the World Unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains. |
