| Martin Luther All who call on God in true faith, earnestly from the heart, will certainly be heard, and will receive what they have asked and desired. An earthly kingdom cannot exist without inequality of persons. Some must be free, some serfs, some rulers, some subjects. Be a sinner and sin strongly, but more strongly have faith and rejoice in Christ. Cannons and fire-arms are cruel and damnable machines; I believe them to have been the direct suggestion of the Devil. If adam had seen in a vision the horrible instruments his children were to invent, he would have died of grief. Christians are to be taught that the pope would and should wish to give of his own money, even though he had to sell the basilica of St. Peter, to many of those from whom certain hawkers of indulgences cajole money. Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree. Every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying. Everything that is done in the world is done by hope."Faith is a living, daring confidence in God's grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times. Faith must trample under foot all reason, sense, and understanding. First I shake the whole [apple] tree, that the ripest might fall. Then I climb the tree and shake each limb, and then each branch and then each twig, and then I look under each leaf. God save me from my friends. I can protect myself from my enemies. I am afraid that the schools will prove the very gates of hell, unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures and engraving them in the heart of the youth. I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. amen. I have no pleasure in any man who despises music. It is no invention of ours: it is a gift of God. I place it next to theology. Satan hates music: he knows how it drives the evil spirit out of us. I shall never be a heretic; I may err in dispute, but I do not wish to decide anything finally; on the other hand, I am not bound by the opinions of men. If he have faith, the believer cannot be restrained. He betrays himself. He breaks out. He confesses and teaches this gospel to the people at the risk of life itself. If I am not allowed to laugh in heaven, I don't want to go there. In our sad condition our only consolation is the expectancy of another life. Here below all is incomprehensible. Justice is a temporary thing that must at last come to an end; but the conscience is eternal and will never die. Make sure to send a lazy man the angel of death. Mankind has a free will; but it is free to milk cows and to build houses, nothing more. Music is a discipline, and a mistress of order and good manners, she makes the people milder and gentler, more moral and more reasonable. No man ought to lay a cross upon himself, or to adopt tribulation, as is done in popedom; but if a cross or tribulation come upon him, then let him suffer it patiently, and know that it is good and profitable for him. No one need think that the world can be ruled without blood. The civil sword shall and must be red and bloody. Peace if possible, truth at all costs.Prayer is a strong wall and fortress of the church; it is a goodly Christian weapon. Reason is a whore, the greatest enemy that faith has. Reason is the enemy of faith. So our Lord God commonly gave riches to those gross asses to whom he vouchsafed nothing else. Some plague the people with too long sermons; for the faculty of listening is a tender thing, and soon becomes weary and satiated. Superstition, idolatry and hypocrisy have ample wages, but the truth goes begging. The fewer the words, the better the prayer. The God of this world is riches, pleasure and pride. The human heart is like a ship on a stormy sea driven about by winds blowing from all four corners of heaven. The multitude of books is a great evil. There is no limit to this fever for writing. The reproduction of mankind is a great marvel and mystery. Had God consulted me in the matter, I should have advised him to continue the generation of the species by fashioning them out of clay. The will is a beast of burden. If God mounts it, it wishes and goes as God wills; if Satan mounts it, it wishes and goes as Satan wills; Nor can it choose its rider... the riders contend for its possession. There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage. When I am angry I can pray well and preach well. Where God builds a church the devil builds a chapel. Who loves not women, wine and song remains a fool his whole life long. |
